A Rainy Summer Day

by Jon Haarstad on July 17, 2007

I am a creature of habits.  It never ceases to amaze me how we are programmed to respond to our senses.  For me, there are many instances where a certain song will trigger certain memories (some good, some not-so-good).

Today was an example of that.  For those living here in Portland, we had a little gift early this morning – rain which, after a long and hot period, is a welcomed part of the summer.

Rain has always been one huge “trigger” for me and unlike many folks who complain about the rain, I personally am quite fond of the falling precipitation.  There’s a unique smell of rain that I absolutely love and along the lines of music triggers – in the case of rain, it often leads to an urge to listen to jazz.

So, today was a jazz day … and a lovely one at that.
