Chucking the Fluff

by Jon Haarstad on January 3, 2008

The past couple of days have given me a bit of an epiphany on life … especially the digital life that I spend a lot of time in.  Maybe it’s because I do in fact spend TOO much time in it or it could more have to do with the things I chose to do within the digital realm.

Either way – here’s some “resolutions” I’ve already enacted into my daily workflow.

1.  I’m CANCELLING pretty much all email subscriptions.  Since I only read a few of them, all they do is clutter my email and this will go a huge way towards ridding my life of the constant flow and perusal of useless email.  INSTEAD – if the content is worth tracking, I’m subscribing to the site’s RSS feed which is handled so well with the new Mac Leopard OS between Safari and Mail – it’s “like butter” – so smooth and easy it’s ridiculous.

2.  I’m going to go back to being a stickler to the EMPTY inbox method.  For those that aren’t aware of the GTD system – get on board – it will unclutter your life and make you sane again.

3.  I’m declaring full out WAR on spam and this time I’m going to win with brute strength.  My source of brute strength in this case?  I’m now utilizing the nifty Google Apps which includes the ability to run all my business email through their systems which have one of the best spam filters available (and it’s free).  Today I received not 1 single spam email.  Glorious!

4. Speaking of GTD – it’s back in play.  Life is too precious to be surrounded by time-wasters.  Smarter and more efficient work equals more time for the really important things and people in my life.

Oh – and I plan to blog more often so here we go.
