RSS Reader? You Should Be.

If you are an internet user who likes to stay informed on various matters but don’t have or want to spend countless hours perusing the web for those little nuggets – then you must master the art of RSS feeds if you haven’t already.

What was once a niche resource is becoming more and more mainstream.  Well, today a nice little announcement came out from one of the better RSS reader programs.  I learned about it on…well, you guessed it – my RSS feed reader (I use the new Mac Mail on Leopard).

The announcement? The folks at Newsgator are now offering their award-winning RSS Feed readers (FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, etc.) for free.  That’s right – you have one LESS excuse NOT to become a true RSS reading aficionado. Come on – all the cool kids are doing it.

The Liberation Continues

January 5, 2008  |  by Jon Haarstad  |  General  |  No Comments

[ Funny picture of my roommate Tyler ] As an update to my previous post - it's amazing how liberating it is to clear out the unnecessary clutter in our lives and for me this is especially true in my digital world.  It's like the adage that goes something like - "more is not better - it's just more". I never knew how much fun it could be to UNSUBSCRIBE from all the crazy email lists that I've gotten myself on over the years.  Many of these lists are things that at one time I thought I would benefit from - mostly technology and work-related items.  Truth?  I read a small fraction of them meaning that I easily spent more time deleting them than reading them.  Value?  ZERO. De-Clutter.  Simplify.  Reduce.  Great thoughts and a great way to live life. Now I need to get ready for a trip to Seattle for some playoff...

Chucking the Fluff

January 3, 2008  |  by Jon Haarstad  |  General  |  No Comments

The past couple of days have given me a bit of an epiphany on life ... especially the digital life that I spend a lot of time in.  Maybe it's because I do in fact spend TOO much time in it or it could more have to do with the things I chose to do within the digital realm. Either way - here's some "resolutions" I've already enacted into my daily workflow. 1.  I'm CANCELLING pretty much all email subscriptions.  Since I only read a few of them, all they do is clutter my email and this will go a huge way towards ridding my life of the constant flow and perusal of useless email.  INSTEAD - if the content is worth tracking, I'm subscribing to the site's RSS feed which is handled so well with the new Mac Leopard OS between Safari and Mail - it's "like butter" - so smooth...

Vote N.O. on Measure 49

October 21, 2007  |  by Jon Haarstad  |  General  |  No Comments

I've tried to avoid too much politics on this blog but this is one thing that I feel must be spoken out about.  This is one of the most misunderstood measures that is the product of a significant effort on the part of bureaucrats and special interest groups to get back at Oregonians for their audacity in passing Measure 37 during the last election. The entire "Yes-on-49" campaign has been masterful in their advertising (ahem, propaganda efforts) and I can see where many smart voters may be suckered into voting for something that is an affront to property owners in Oregon. Vote NO to a system that serves to give the politicians of this state the right to steal what isn't theirs (stealing is taking something that's not yours without paying for it).  It's not about subdivisions or farms ... it's about the right of legitimate property owners to own their land. ...
