Bush issues veto in historic showdown

TheStar.com - News - Bush issues veto in historic showdown

With all the double-speak occuring these days, it’s all I can do to not scream…literally. So, assuming the Dems get their way and we set a “pull-out” date (doubtful with Pres. Bush’s veto power) - let’s all do a little thing called a “mental excercise” and work that thing that is often under-used these days…the logical sides of our brains.

What will happen if/when US troops just up and leave in the next year? Well, let’s take a look at the violence that IS happening and the banter coming out of the mouths of our politicians who are jockeyed to be “that guy” or “that lady” who stared down the President.

Violence = FACT: a vast majority of casualties are innocent civilians (not US soldiers). FACT: the instigators of the violence include such entities as Al Queida, Iran & Syria (directly and indirectly) who are trying to create the chaos and incite the “civil war”.

Side-note - may I remind everyone that we, the US, are there trying to create a lasting PEACE whereas the “insurgents…aka terrorists…aka foreign fighters…aka jihadists” are trying to dissrupt peace and create fear and chaos…and to what end? Power. Absolute. Violent. Oppressive. Power.

What our politicians are saying: “The president has put our troops in the middle of a civil war,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Civil war?! So, we should never get our hands dirty with civil wars? So, according to thinking of good ol’ Harry… “too bad people of Darfur - you’re in a civil war and so you’ll just have to duke it out yourselves.”

Oh how I wish we could solve the world’s problems and deal with evil men and women peacefully and “diplomatically”. I don’t like any bloodshed. But world history and reality tell a different story. While I don’t believe the US should be the policeman of the world, at the same time, we do have the ability and I would state the responsibility that comes with that ability - to PROTECT the innocent…to STOP genocide whenever and wherever it occurs or might occur.

Have we all completely lost the mental ability to look at history, learn from the past…and avoid the same mistakes? If the current political climate in America existed in the 40’s (World War II), would we have had the political fortitude to put an end to the Holocaust or would we have absolved ourselves by claiming it wasn’t our fight?

So…back to the initial analysis. If Dems have their way and we pull out OR our troops get slowly bled on the field by being denied their equipment and means to conduct themselves and protect the Iraqi people (and each other)…what then? Who’s going to take responsibility for the bloodshed when/if we pull out? What will the triumphant Democrats tell the thousands upon thousands (millions?) of dead Iraqis? “Hey, it’s your fight, not ours.” “Hey, it’s Bush’s fault - we never wanted to be there.” “Hey, sorry about your family but we didn’t find any WMDs” “Hey, sorry but the American people are tired of war - we have too many online social networks to join.” WHAT?! WHAT WILL THEY SAY?! Will they be man/woman enough to take the responsibility?

For some reason…I doubt it. I’m sure like everything else it’ll be Bush’s fault in spite of his insistence against THEIR chosen course of action (or INaction).

For those of you who bemoan the negative feeling towards America from the “world community” - how much more do you think we’ll be hated for failing to clean up our own mess and leave something truly better than when we stepped in…regardless of the legitimacy of that initial action which is moot at this point. On top of that, if we leave…there’s a good chance we’ll have to go back later when conditions are considerably worse. Consequences…please don’t overlook the consequences.

With the current political climate - I doubt that we can ever complete ANYTHING anymore because our attention spans are so short and we “bore” of things so quickly.
